Friday through Sunday we took our chances with the weather and headed to Hickory Run for some good ol' camping. We weren't able to go last year and I was just itching to go, and we picked a perfect weekend. The bad weather held off and the only storm we got was a little sprinkle and distant thunderstorm Saturday night. Besides Ryan ending up in our bed it didn't even bug us. The bees ended up being the problem. Luke probably swatted more than 50 while we were there. We also discovered that our kids are definitely city kids. As we set up camp we told them to go play and explore and they really didn't know what to do. I guess that's what not going camping in 2 years can do to a kid. Kyrie did not like getting her hands dirty and it took some coaxing for her to some out of her shell and learn that getting dirty is ok.
Our camping site bordered a big field and on the other side of the field was a playground. We took the kids there a few times to play and get some energy out and they loved it.There was a small bridge that overlooked a little dam and waterfall. The kids loved throwing rocks, sticks, and leaves in it and watching them fall over the edge.
Here in Pennsylvania you can't take your own wood up camping, you have to buy it when you get there. Some of the wood wasn't quite dry enough for a great fire. Thank goodness I am married to a pyro that was able to build us a few great fires. The evenings were really nice for Luke and I. After the kids were asleep we were able to play games, enjoy the fire, and relax.
We took Ryan's tractors and he had a blast digging in the dirt.
This is one of the views from our camp site. It was a pretty nice spot. It helped that there weren't very many people around us and we had more space for the kids to run around.
Luke making some yummy breakfast for us.
We wanted to go on a hike but we had to pick one the kids could do. Luke did the research and we picked a fun hike called Hawks Falls that the kids were able to do by themselves.
There were spots along the hike that we could stop so Ryan could throw rocks and leaves in. That was his favorite part of the hike.
This was the waterfall at the end of the hike. We stayed there for awhile relaxing and enjoying the views. The kids liked to watch Luke chop the wood for the fire. They sat down after the hike with a snack and watched Luke work his magic with the wood.
There was a big rock in our site that the kids loved to play pirates on. It was fun watching them run around with sticks as swords chasing each other, or Luke for that matter.

Fun!!! We've only been camping once since we were married and that was when Parker was 8 months old, and it was over night (putting us gone fewer than 20 hours. My poor kids don't even know what camping really is. We don't even have a tent to fit our family...man we need to get the ball rolling. This entry really made me want to go bad!
I love all the pictures. It looks like a really nice place, and I'm glad the weather was good for you. Doesn't food always taste soo good when you're camping ( : Go Luke getting those fires started!
How fun was that? I love the campsite.. it looked perfect! I think it is funny you said the kids didn't even know what to do. Maybe in a couple years you can go camping more. The hike looked fun and the scenery was gorgeous!!!
PS.. Scott laughed at your Luke being a pyro comment. He is too. :)
Your kids are seriously so cute. I love the shot of your three heads together. Looks like a fun little place!
